Visiting Paul Chaleff Studio March 6th 2022

It's a rainy day in upstate New York.

We drive up, down and around the mountain scapes that the great state has to offer all the while being blinded by the thick fog ahead. 

As we approach Ancram, where Paul Chaleff’s studio and home is located, the clouds and fog start to fade away and the sun peaks its head through.

The hour and forty minute ride to Paul Chaleff’s studio is well worth it. The views alone are breathtaking, but the studio itself is a work of art. Every nook and cranny of Paul’s studio is made to accommodate Paul’s every need. Everything from the height of each step being shorter than the standard to the pulley systems suspended from the ceiling to help carry his large pieces. 

After entering the studio we were greeted by the wonderful smell of home cooked paella and the delightful smile of Paul Chaleff. It had been 2 years since we last saw each other and yet at the age of 75 he looked as young as ever. 

Upon being given a tour of the wonderful home studio, we sat down to talk about the plans for an upcoming event with Shigeyoshi Morioka. With wonderful stories of the ceramics world in New York we had a small history lesson and inspiration for the 40th anniversary exhibition that would commemorate Paul and Shigeyoshi’s time and expertise. The exhibition is set for 2023 and the only question that remains is how we could possibly showcase the rich history of Paul and Shigeyoshi’s impact on ceramics.

あいにくの雨。
悠の運転でアンクラム　ニューヨークまで北へ約1時間40分のドライブ。
途中雨も上がり、友人のトム　ニーレンバーグ家族と現地集合。
勝手知ったる入口から中へ。
スタジオをぬけて、ギャラリーの奥のリビングスペースへ入って声をかけた。
ポールさんお得意のパエリアの良い匂いと満面の笑みで迎えてくれた。
2年ぶりだろうか、75歳になったポールさんは相変わらずの様子で、手際良くテーブルの準備をしてくれている。
トムの家族をポールさんに紹介して、奥さんのヘイスークさんとの挨拶も終わり、お決まりのギャラリー、スタジオツアー。
長身のトムより更に大きな壺、彫刻作品、タブレットと呼ばれる迫力のスラブワークが壁に掛けられている。6歳の双子の兄妹も、興味深々である。
スタジオには乾燥中の大きな作品が轆轤の上でゆっくりと回っている。窓から差し込む陽の光で、乾燥が偏ってしまわないようにという事らしい。75歳の現在も衰えぬ創作意欲は、感嘆に値する。

久々の再会にシャンパンで乾杯。
ポールさんのパエリアをみんなで堪能した。
ポールさんの話は、とても面白くアメリカの陶芸の歴史に大変重要な情報ばかりだ。詳しくはここでは書かないが、陶芸という工芸をファインアートのレベルに持ち上げた立役者である。画家でもあるトムの奥さんの由香さんが、とても良いインタビュアーであった。雨も上がり、青空も見えて来て、子供たちはポーチから外へ出て、丘から見下ろす風景に遊んだ。
高さ3メートルもあるだろう4本のモニュメントが風景に溶け込んで素晴らしい。
22歳の悠はポールさんのコレクションに感心して色々質問をしていた。
50年以上も年の離れた先輩アーティストの話は、きっと心に残る事だろう。

1981年、ニューヨークのアーロンフェイバーギャラリーで行われた森岡成好との２人展から40年余り、再度２人展を行う事を企画するための今回のミーティングは、お互いの生存確認をするには十分な収穫だった。さて、どのような形でこの40年の軌跡を描くことが出来るだろう。
1975年に唐津の中里隆の窯に集まった６人の若い陶芸家のメンバーだったポールさんとシゲさん。
‘81年の展覧会の後は、別々の作陶人生を歩む事となる。時はすでに2022年、展覧会”40 years after “
は、2023年の予定である。
